De Glasparel is a new development concept with a new mix of functions where the horticultural sector will be integrated with other economic activities, recreational facilities and housing. Connecting these functions will create chances for sustainable energy, for example. De Glasparel is part of the complete area development of the Zuidplaspolder by Waddinxveen.

Stacking

The plan’s dream vision envisages double use of space with some of the greenhouses being stacked on top of company premises. Water storage is planned under the greenhouses that are not stacked and this will create space without reducing the area under glass. This space can be used for green areas, recreation, companies and housing, for example. The plan’s CO2 points of departure are CO2-neutral construction and setting up the area in a sustainable way. The plan fits seamlessly with the principles of sustainability, CO2-neutral energy use and optimum layout of the total area development of the Zuidplaspolder. The Minister for Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment has made a financial contribution toward this end.

Research

The combination of greenhouse horticulture with housing and other businesses makes solutions possible in the fields of energy and water management that aren’t possible in a normal residential area. Examples of this are a covered winter garden, a heated, open air swimming pool or a landscape with pools that can flood when there are heavy downpours.
